From Issue #7, Winter 2005 Editor's Notes
::: Estimating the circulation of a print publication is a simple matter of counting the number of copies distributed. Getting a reasonable picture of the readership of an on-line magazine is not so easy. After some research, we've concluded that the closest comparison to print circulation is the number of individual visits to the web site. Others may disagree, but that works for us until we're persuaded otherwise. We are currently averaging slightly under 5,000 visits per issue, up from about 3000 a year ago. The trend upward is steady. We're certainly not in the league of mass circulation magazines, but we're doing OK for a young specialized publication not quite two years old. We have no plans for selling advertising in the Digest nor do we anticipate charging a subscription fee. As long as we can scrape together the cost of publication and enjoy the generosity of our web hosting service provider (see lower right), the Readers Theatre Digest will continue to be free and independent. Yet there is this to consider: Your editor, though mentally vigorous and in good health, is well into his Geezer Years. Realistically, the time will certainly come when he will no longer be able to give RTD the attention it deserves. In preparation for the inevitable, Ye Ed is mulling over the wisdom of taking on another person as Editor while continuing as Publisher. If you think you could handle the job (at the same wage level as mine, namely zip) and can convince me that you can, let's dialogue and see where it leads us. For the rest of you loyal readers, fear not. Ye Ed ain't going anywhere soon, God willing. Barring a catastrophic event RTD will continue to grow both in readership and in the variety and quality of content. In the meantime you can help boost our circulation by telling your friends, acquaintances and colleagues in theatre, education and literacy circles that our web site address is : http://www.readerstheatredigest.com and that they ought to take a few minutes to visit it. Thanks and God Bless. Bob Demers Editor-Publisher ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Want to be notified by e-mail when the next issue of RTD is on line? Just click here.... |
