From Issue #5, Summer 2004

Editor's Notes :::
Is Four Times a Year Enough?

This Issue - Number 5 - begins our second year of publication. The quarterly schedule seems to be working out OK, yet three months is a long time between issues and a bit too long to establish a sense of continuity from one issue to another. This is especially true in the case of serial articles like those by Lucy Rioux (RT in education), Mary McCarthy (RT for grownups) and Gordon Bigalke (RT for Senior Citizens)

So we're giving serious thought to moving to a bimonthly schedule. Not yet, but soon, depending upon several factors.

In order to make this work without overburdening our current roster of volunteer authors, we would need to develop more articles of the quality and interest our readers have come to expect of the RTDigest. Writing for the Digest does not demand the literary skills of a Dickens or a Shaw, but it does require a literate and easy way with words and a thorough knowledge and understanding of your subject.

Interested writers should first check our Editorial Policy page.

As regular readers know, we don't print notices of upcoming productions, items about who's doing what, press releases and other newsy 'puff' pieces. An exception may be made when the event is a logical vehicle for communicating useful information to our readers. A good example is Irving Zimmer's production notes elsewhere in this issue on his upcoming "Today I Am a Fountain Pen".

A list of ideas for articles would be endless, but a short list might include: RT as Experimental Theatre; Case Studies (abbreviated) of the use of RT in therapy; Differences between RT, Chamber Theatre, staged readings, etc.; Touring RT; History of RT.

If you have an idea for an article you'd like to write, or a suggestion for an article we might develop in-house, e-mail all the details you can and we'll take it from there and respond to you in due time.

We also try to include in each issue a reprint of a RT-related article or essay from other web sites. This Issue, for example, features a reprint from the Ball State University web site titled, "Danish Readers Theatre Exchange Promotes Literacy". If you come across an interesting article about Readers Theatre as you surf the web, please bring it to our attention with an e-mail to: editor@readerstheatredigest.com .

For those who are interested in such things, Readers Theatre Digest averages 2300 discrete site visits and over 5000 page visits each issue and the numbers are trending steadily upwards.
